Professional Profile

I am a professional Italian-to-English translator and a native speaker of British English. Originally from Somerset in the South West of England, I started learning Italian as a second language at the age of 20.

From the early 1970s to the mid-1980s I worked as a language teacher in various Italian private and State schools in the Piedmont and Veneto regions and as an interpreter for private businesses.

I have been translating a wide range of texts since 1986, when I gradually began to reduce my commitments as an English language teacher and became increasingly interested in this profession. However, I had occasionally been involved in translation projects since 1973 and I also worked briefly as an interpreter and translator while serving as a conscript in the Italian Alpine Corps in 1975/76 after I had acquired Italian citizenship.

As a 'specialist' over the years I have gained experience in certain fields. A full list is provided under the heading 'Areas of Specialisation'.

On account of previous experience in the fields of clinical psychology and psychometrics I often accept work relating to these particular areas.

From 1989 to 2005 I collaborated with the Pentastudio Marketing Agency in Vicenza (N.E. Italy) as a translator, proofreader and consultant for marketing materials and English advertising texts. Most of the documents I translated for this firm, such as those written for the Vicenza Trade Fair Board and Eutelsat (the European Intergovernmental Organisation for satellite communications), were used in publications distributed worldwide.

For a period of about 12 months (1992) I was a sub-contractor for the Vicenza branch of the Italian A.P.I. (Associazione Piccole e Medie Industrie), providing a translation service on a part-time basis.

Towards the end of the 1990s I was included in the lists of external freelance translators of the European Commission. This contract required proof that I had translated at least 500 pages per year over three consecutive years.

In 2012 I was included in an EPSO (EU) database of eligible candidates following a selection procedure based on competency tests for the FR>EN and IT>EN language combinations.
